Background of the Study
Urban sprawl refers to the uncontrolled expansion of urban areas into the surrounding rural land, often resulting in environmental, social, and economic challenges. Kontagora Local Government Area (LGA) in Niger State, located in Nigeria's middle-belt, is experiencing rapid urbanization that is contributing to significant urban sprawl. This phenomenon, influenced by factors such as population growth, migration patterns, and economic development, has brought about geopolitical implications that affect land use, resource distribution, and the quality of life for local residents. In addition to population dynamics, urban sprawl in Kontagora is shaped by political and governance issues at both local and state levels. This study seeks to examine the geopolitical implications of urban sprawl in Kontagora, highlighting the interactions between urban growth, policy-making, and community development.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Urban sprawl in Kontagora LGA is creating a range of challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, displacement of rural communities, and environmental degradation. These issues are compounded by geopolitical factors such as local governance structures, political interests, and inter-regional migration patterns. The lack of a comprehensive urban planning framework and the growing competition for land and resources between rural and urban populations have led to tensions and inefficiencies in urban management. This study aims to investigate the geopolitical implications of urban sprawl in Kontagora and to identify strategies for sustainable urban growth and land use planning.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the geopolitical implications of urban sprawl in Kontagora LGA.

  • To explore the effects of urban sprawl on land use, infrastructure, and social cohesion in Kontagora.

  • To recommend strategies for managing urban sprawl and promoting sustainable development in Kontagora LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  • How does urban sprawl in Kontagora LGA affect land use and resource distribution?

  • What geopolitical factors contribute to the growth of urban sprawl in Kontagora?

  • What strategies can be implemented to mitigate the negative effects of urban sprawl and promote sustainable urbanization in Kontagora?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • Urban sprawl in Kontagora LGA is significantly influenced by geopolitical factors such as local political dynamics and migration patterns.

  • The rapid growth of urban areas in Kontagora has led to negative impacts on land use, infrastructure, and environmental sustainability.

  • Effective urban planning and governance can mitigate the adverse effects of urban sprawl and promote sustainable urban growth in Kontagora LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the geopolitical dimensions of urban sprawl in Kontagora LGA and offer practical recommendations for sustainable urban planning. The findings will be beneficial for policymakers, urban planners, and local authorities seeking to address the challenges of urban growth while ensuring the equitable distribution of resources and services. Additionally, the research will contribute to the broader discussion on the impact of urbanization on rural-urban dynamics in Nigeria (Ojo & Yusuf, 2024).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the implications of urban sprawl within Kontagora LGA and will assess its effects on land use, governance, and local communities. The study may be limited by access to up-to-date urban planning data and the challenges of engaging local stakeholders in the research process.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Urban Sprawl: The uncontrolled or unplanned expansion of urban areas into surrounding rural lands, typically characterized by low-density housing and increased transportation needs.

  • Geopolitical Implications: The political, economic, and social effects of geographical factors, such as population distribution and governance, on development outcomes.

  • Sustainable Urbanization: The process of urban growth that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, particularly in terms of land use, infrastructure, and environmental impact.
